Nothings safe at any hour

The FCC has a time called the safe harbor hour at night that material not suitable for children is allowed to be aired.  The only problem with this is the assumption that children woun't see it.  I'm not saying to further the restrictions, I'm just pointing out how naive our government is really being!

Technology today allows for anything to be recorded to be viewed at a later date, point out my first argument.  This technology makes the safe harbor hour useless because the programming can be recorded and watched later.  Another good point is the amount of youth with TV's in their rooms.  Having TV in their rooms children can stay up unknowingly to their parents and watch anything at anytime they want.  Finally my last point is the emerging trend for TV stations to air shows on-line making availability to the material easier than ever.

The safe harbor law has become very outdated and today should be removed.  The avilability of the material is virtually endless no matter if its aired at night or in the day.  Therefore as technology changes so must our laws so they pertain to todays society.

[...] I am not really sure whether or not I agree or disagree with this blog. I agree with the sense that children are still able to access material that may not be suitable for them, however, I am not sure that I agree with the part that claims our government is being naïve. I think that yes, technology has changed since the safe harbor law was created but I do not think that it necessarily needs to be changed. With the government still using the safe harbor law they are still covered for showing sexually and other explicit material because it is at a late hour. The blogger in the blog I am referring to made the comment that the children are able to view the shows online and can see the material there if they do not watch it on TV, my point is why should the government change the law if the children are just going to be able to view the material anyway. If children were only able to see the material through late night television then I could see changing the law to accommodate the recent technological advances but since the children are still able to view it online changing the law wouldn’t stop them. [...] I have to respectfully disagree with this post on the safe harbor hours. Safe harbor is an FCC term the hours between 10 pm and 6am. These are the hours that stations are allowed to air material that is deemed indecent for children. I find nothing wrong with the safe harbor laws. [...]

These are good points, but I feel that keeping these hours is effective. Children are least likely to be watching television at this time (especially compared to other times of the day) and technology exists for blocking channels and programs to keep children from viewing them anyway.

[...] This post mentions the FCC’s ‘safe harbor hours’ and how they are “outdated” because of factors such as children having televisions in their rooms and VCRs that allow for recording programs that come on at this time. [...]
