The government is currently looking at a labor plan to force Internet service providers to filter out porn and violence.  If this is done it will only create black-markets for it and woun't be effective seeing as how the net is global.  The law would only be able to regulate the porn, or sites, in Australia and just hinder their economy by eliminating any revenues made in the porn industry.  Sex, and therefore porn, is basic human instinct and to regulate it seems nuts.  If this laws is passed it could also give anti-porn activists more to use against the porn industry globally and eventually spread the ban globally!  Before this law is passed the government needs to look at it from a broader perspective and step into reality!

   Technology today allows for anything to be recorded to be viewed at a later date, point out my first argument.  This technology makes the safe harbor hour useless because the programming can be recorded and watched later.  Another good point is the amount of youth with TV's in their rooms.  Having TV in their rooms children can stay up unknowingly to their parents and watch anything at anytime they want.  Finally my last point is the emerging trend for TV stations to air shows on-line making availability to the material easier than ever.

     The safe harbor law has become very outdated and today should be removed.  The avilability of the material is virtually endless no matter if its aired at night or in the day.  Therefore as technology changes so must our laws so they pertain to todays society.

      I fell as though with the proper parenting and attention that obscene material wouldn't be a problem today.  My parents were very open with me throughout my youth and spoke to me about a lot, almost everything, and I never wanted to or even attempted to view obscene material because of that.  My parents never had the don't have sex or don't do drugs lectures, they just instilled morals upon me.  With these morals came a sense of what was right and wrong therefore making obscene materials the farthest thing from a problem.  Along with the morals came perhaps a more important thing, a lot of attention and care.  The attention and care is what a lot of children today don't get especially in homes where parents are hardely around.

     Instead of blaming the companys and other involved parties for giving our children obscene material our society must look at the real problem, the parents.  With the correct amount of care and attention our youth would not have the desire nor the outlet to view obscene materials.

   Technology today allows for parents to block our certain TV channels, and some even allow for specific shows.  Family Guy is a adult cartoon with adult themes most of which are OK for kids over the age of 14, and possibly a bit younger with the way kids mature today.  The adult themes and cartoon nudity, that leaves out genitals and leaves that area without anything,  are mild and most children wouldn't get the more adult jokes. (I don't get some at first!!!)  This question of what children watch and it being acceptable or not is not new at all.  The Simpson's faced the same contervisey when it was first aired too.  What I believe the real problem is here in both cases is peoples parenting skills today!  I seems as-though parents don't pay any attention to there children, or at least very little, nor do they encourage them to do other things than watch TV.  When I was young I never wanted to watch TV unless it was a movie,  I wanted to be outside or at least do something other than watch TV, it was boring.  I do believe my parents are exceptional parents as I look back on my life and that helps a lot, but they didn't do too much extra.  

   All it takes is good parenting or at least a bit of attention to monitor what you kids watch.  Kids will be kids and yes, they may watch shows outside of your home that you don't allow, but, again good parenting could pervent this.  My point being if you believe as a parent that Family Guy, and other adult cartoons, are obscene handle it the right way by being a good parent and raising your children with morals so they will not be interested in them.  Furthermore, parents good or bad should monitor what their children watch all the time and if there are truely concerned about what they watch don't give them the access to it!

     People should have the right, as americans especially, to view or posses whatever they want regardless of what others think.  The world is full of over-opiniated people that feel they should rule the world and frankly they are the ones hindering our freedom.  With all of the changes in our laws, federal, state, and local, that take place every day our freedom is becoming less and less.  I'm not saying have no laws but, what people do behind closed doors should be their oun business.  The laws should pertain to public places not personal! Seeing as how Lord Lyndhurst had the same problem as we do now, defining obscene, our government shouldn't regulate it because they can't even agree on it.

     My opinion is one that transcends many generations, and that is lighten up if not eliminate obscenity laws for regular private use.  By restricting what people can posses, view, and even buy or country is becoming communist!  Our government really needs to look at obscenity laws for personal people and make some real changes to represent or "free" country.  Even third world countries ruled by dictors aren't as harsh!

            Since the beginning of the burn to CD/DVD trend there has been a huge issue of how companies can conquer this and remain profitable.  Vivid Video is among the first to accept this trend and market for it, as described at, http://www.wired.com/news/columns/0,70547-0.html?tw=wn_index_6.  Starting on April 3, 2006 they will launch a new service called Burn to DVD.  The program will allow consumers to burn a movie, only once, to a DVD after the purchase.  By doing this Vivid is riding the trend and in fact obtaining the first mover advantage over their competition, which I believe is how they will be able to maintain their market share and continue to be profitable.

            As discussed throughout the course of the semester Porn is a large industry with many opportunities, but in order to stay on top and be a market winner you must always continue to innovate.  Vivid is an excellent example of this.  By offering a one-time download over the internet they are eliminating huge production costs throughout the company.  BY offering the product online there is virtually no costs, such as, jewel cases, jewel art, store space, wrapping, ect.  Vivid is clearly staying one step ahead of the entire industry and utilizing trends that other companies are considering to be harmful.

            Being such a luctrive business the porn industry is hard to maintain a positive profit in unless you are ahead of the competition.   Vivid Video is clearly ahead of the competition and proving that they have the necessary skills to maintain their current market share when other companies are continuing to lose market share
